Made it!

Sep 11, 06:34 AM

Iowa did its best, including hard headwinds and a car-only bridge across the Mississippi, but I made it to Nauvoo. Finally!

Nauvoo is famous as a Mormon pilgrimage site and where Joseph Smith died. But I’ll tell more tomorrow.

I got here just in time to miss the “Rendevous in Old Nauvoo,” which is a short comedic play put on my elder missionaries in the Church of Latter Day Saints. It tells the story of life in Nauvoo before the Exodus, a Mormon term for the long journey taken by Mormons to leave the bellicose United States and head for what is now Utah, then part of Spanish territory.

The play answers questions such as “Will Jed learn to say ‘heck’?”, “Will Abigail ever get a pickle barrel?”, and “Will horses with wings ever leave Nauvoo?” As much fun as that sounds, I’m at peace with missing it.

But tomorrow looks to be a full day. Mormons love nothing more than explaining their faith and their history, so I’ve got horse-drawn wagon rides, oxen-drawn wagon rides, and carriage rides in store. It’s like being a kid again.

  1. Hi Matt! I googled you to see if I could find your address, but I guess you don’t have one currently. Email me when can or stop by on your way back through the midwest! P.S. I will read all of your blog. promise.

  3. Thank you for your interesting comments… glad you survived that truck. We made a pilgrimage from Texas to Sylvan Springs, Rome City Indiana, on Sept 10 (sorry we missed you), met Nick, toured grounds, buildings including the “tunnel” to the underground springs, etc… BUT DIDN’T take pictures.Thank you for those, too. I’ve forward your blog site to others. May Our Lady of America continue to intercede for you and St. Michael guard and protect you. You will be in our prayers!
